I was pretty disappointed to hear about the City of Lake Stevens’ latest change to trash collection contract. My family has happily been receiving service from Republic for the last six years we have lived here in Lake Stevens, and we are learning that a change has been made at the city level requiring us to change solid waste providers. I’m puzzled and frustrated by this change.
Shouldn’t I have the right to pay for the level of service that I want? If the city has dealt with contracts to multiple waste providers in the past, why the need to change that now? We moved to Lake Stevens from Colorado Springs, CO (6 years ago) and in that city, you could use any waste company you wanted. Sure, it meant there were trash trucks in our neighborhood most days of the week, which wasn’t necessarily a positive thing, but I don’t buy the fact that it’s simpler to operate from a city perspective with just one contracted service provider. Plus, there’s no incentive for Waste Management to do anything to improve their level of service.
The city didn’t solicit input from those impacted by this change.
Choosing a trash provider and shoving that decision down our collective throats, all I can say is bad form. And biweekly recycling isn’t enough, even if it is a 96-gallon can, especially when no additional recycling (like collapsed boxes on the side) will be picked up.
You know the adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”? If it’s possible for you to “un-fix” this, please do.
