I have worked for Providence Everett for about 13 years, during that time I have not used a single hour of my extended-illness benefit. Many employees have several hundred and up to 1,040 hours saved through decades of service to the hospital and community.
Why then do I feel so betrayed by them that they are taking this away? It’s because this is like an insurance policy for when I do need time off and its a benefit that has been accrued over time. No one uses an insurance policy unless they have a need.
It is a break of trust to have someone earn something and then have it taken away before you can use it. It’s also directly contradictory to the organization’s core values they require the employees to follow: compassion, dignity, justice, excellence and integrity. Where do they find justice or integrity in their actions, is this what they call justice, how about dignity or compassion?
They are not even offering to let us use what we have earned, they are just freezing us out of our benefit we have already earned. The hospice nurses are right: Providence has lost its way.
