I have been following the story of unnecessary staff and student illnesses and educational distractions at Fairmount Elementary in the Mukilteo School District for some time now. I was so glad to read in The Herald that Mountain Loop Mine has been ordered to stop work next to that school (“Mining company ordered to stop work next to school south of Everett,” The Herald, Feb. 22). How in the world was a mine ever been allowed to operate next to a school?! And without any permits? An unbelievable story.
I drove by the back of Fairmount School on Center Road recently. Awful. Large machinery. Noisy. Dusty. Most people probably drive by the front of the school and don’t see the mine. Teachers and students have enough challenges without that!
I was in an unhealthy school situation for 10 years so I can relate. With the help of people who cared, I finally went to court and some changes were made. I hope that can happen, also, for the students and staff at Fairmount.
