EVERETT — After winning their first series and three of their first four to start the Northwest League’s second half, the Everett AquaSox are stumbling into the All-Star break, losing seven of their past eight games.
Now, first-year manager Louis Boyd and crew’s primary task is to right the ship before the three-day layoff
On the same night its parent club was no-hit, the AquaSox registered only one hit and fell to the Spokane Indians, 7-1, on Saturday at Funko Field at Everett Memorial Stadium.
“I just preach every day is a new day,” Boyd said on how he’s handled the tumultuous stretch. “In my mind, if we win or lose the day before, that should have no impact on our preparation and our mindset the next day. We have been preparing very well, both physically and mentally, as a team. Sometimes, games like this happen. We’re going to look back as a staff, see if we can do anything different to put our players in a position for success. If we can’t, we’ll keep grinding away and get ready to play tomorrow.”
Everett recorded its only run in the seventh inning when Patrick Frick scored on a double steal to cut the Indians’ lead to 2-1.
Spokane extended the lead back out to two in the eighth. Kellen Strahm dumped a lead-off triple into the right-field corner and was singled in by David Garcia.
Spokane added four more in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
The Indians jumped on the scoreboard first on Luis Asuncion’s RBI triple into the right-field corner in the first inning to put Spokane up 1-0.
Blaine Crim added to Spokane’s lead in the third with a two-out RBI single to put the Indians up 2-0.
The AquaSox’s only hit was Cash Gladfelter’s infield single to the right side of the diamond in the first inning.
Juan Then was handed the loss after he allowed two runs on three hits, walked two and struck out four.
Then, who missed a considerable amount of time on bereavement leave, is close to being stretched back out, according to Boyd.
“He seemed a little more sharp last outing, but his pitch count has been lengthened a little bit,” Boyd said. “Sometimes a little bit of bumps and bruises after that, but he’s done a really good job of settling in after things happen offensively for them. He does a good job of sticking to his plan and just pounding the strikezone.”
Jeifry Nunez earned the win after he allowed one run on no hits.
The AquaSox (22-28, 4-8 second half) fell two games back of Spokane and Tri-City in the second-half Northwest League North standings.
Tingelstad, Frick to be named All-Stars
AquaSox outfielder Trent Tingelstad and infield Patrick Frick will be named Northwest League All-Stars, according to Boyd. Tingelstad, a Marysville Pilchuck product, is hitting .231/.351/.340 with three homers and six doubles and Frick is hitting .269/.397/.303 with five doubles this season.
Casetta-Stubbs won’t pitch
In preparation for the Northwest League All-Star game on Tuesday, Damon Casetta-Stubbs won’t pitch during his turn in the rotation on Sunday, nor will he throw out of the bullpen, according to Boyd. Kelvin Nunez will start in his place.
