Arkansas star cleared to play in Cotton Bowl

DALLAS — Darren McFadden will play in the Cotton Bowl today after the University of Arkansas reviewed a media report linking the All-America running back and an agent to the purchase of a vehicle and found no reason to make him ineligible.

Arkansas television station KARK has since apologized to McFadden and his family for the report.

The school released a statement Monday, stating it had conducted a thorough review of the allegations reported in the media.

“Based upon the institution’s review, Mr. McFadden remains eligible and will participate in the 2008 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic,” the statement said.

Arkansas adds defensive coordinator: Mississippi State defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson is leaving the Bulldogs to take the same position for new Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino. Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom said Monday in a statement that Johnson had informed him of the decision to leave. No announcement had made by Arkansas.

Granger sent home: Oklahoma defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger won’t play in the Fiesta Bowl against West Virginia on Wednesday after being sent home for disciplinary reasons.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops announced Monday he had suspended Granger, a sophomore who started 11 of 13 games and had 3½ sacks. The coach did not give details of why Granger was disciplined.

Stoops said Steven Coleman and Adrian Taylor will see additional time on the defensive line in Granger’s absence.
