Elbow trouble puts Sheets on disabled list
OAKLAND, Calif. — Right-hander Ben Sheets has been placed on the disabled list by the Oakland Athletics because of an injury to the elbow that required surgery in 2009 and forced him to miss that entire season.
Sheets had been pitching better over his last four starts, going 2-2 with an ERA of 3.38. The two-time all-star was put on the DL for the seventh time in his career. He has a strained right elbow.
Bad knee benches Texas catcher
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers have placed backup catcher Matt Treanor on the 15-day disabled list with a strained ligament in his right knee.
Treanor was injured Friday night when he lunged for first base trying to beat out a grounder and tripped on the foot of Angels first baseman Kevin Frandsen. An an MRI on Saturday showed a strain but no torn ligaments.
Rangers manager Ron Washington says there as no timetable for Treanor’s return, but surgery is not necessary. Treanor was batting .225 with five homers and 23 RBI.
Giants pitcher hurting
PHOENIX — San Francisco Giants left-hander Jeremy Affeldt has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain. Affeldt, 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA, was injured while warming up in the bullpen Friday night.
Maine has shoulder surgery
LOS ANGELES — New York Mets right-hander John Maine had arthroscopic surgery Friday to clean out scar tissue from his shoulder and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training. He is 1-3 with a 6.13 ERA in nine starts for the Mets and did not make it past the sixth inning in any of them.
