County Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2023 bio: Erika Klein

Klein won three individual state championships while at Edmonds H.S. and had an All-American career at the University of Oregon.

The Snohomish County Sports Hall of Fame’s class of 2023 will be inducted at the organization’s annual banquet on Sept. 27 at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett. Here’s the next in a series of bios of the 2023 class highlighted by The Herald:

Erika Klein

Inducted as: Athlete

High school: Edmonds class of 1989

Sport: Women’s cross country/track and field

Klein starred at perhaps the nation’s top distance-running college, having an All-American career at the University of Oregon.

Klein was a decorated high school runner at Edmonds. She won three individual state championships, claiming the AA 1,600 meters and cross country titles in 1987 and the 3,200 meters in 1989. She led the Tigers to team cross country championships in 1985 and 1987.

Klein then headed to Oregon, where she excelled for both the cross country and track and field teams. On the track she was an All-American in 1993 when she placed third in the 1,500 meters at the national championships, helping the Ducks place fourth in the team competition. She was also part of Oregon’s 1,600 relay team that won the Pac-10 championship in 1992, while individually she was second at the Pac-10s in the 800 in 1992 and second in the 1,500 in 1993.

In cross country, Klein was a member of the Oregon teams that won the Pac-10 championship in both 1990 and 1992, and in both years she competed at the NCAA championships.

In 1993 Klein received the Jackson Award as Oregon’s Most Outstanding Female Senior Student Athlete, and she was named the University of Oregon NCAA Woman of the Year. She was also named The Herald’s 1993 Woman of the Year in Sports.
