SHORELINE — Maybe the Arlington baseball team will scrimmage off a batting tee more often now.
After doing it in practice on Friday, the Eagles exploded offensively on Saturday, scoring in all six innings of a shortened 13-3 3A District 1 consolation final victory over Snohomish at Meridian Park.
“It helped us, apparently,” Arlington coach Scott Striegel said. “They walked 14 guys, but we did a good job when they did throw strikes and barreled a lot of balls up.”
Leadoff man Gavin Rork hit an inside-the-park home run and walked four times for the Eagles (20-4), and Owen Bishop homered, doubled and drove as part of an onslaught against 6 Snohomish pitchers.
Arlington’s Jake Russell pitched the first two innings, AJ Croom went three for the win and Bishop finished.
“Russell and Croom haven’t gotten a lot of usage this year because we’ve been so good around them, so we wanted to get them some work today,” Striegel said. “They both attacked the zone and forced Snohomish to put balls in play, and then our defense made the plays.”
Arlington will play at 10 a.m. Saturday morning in Mount Vernon to open the regional round of the state tournament.
Eagles ace Tristan Sheward will start that loser-out game, with Bishop ready for an afternoon contest.

SHORELINE — The Storm blanked the Scots in the 3A District 1 consolation final on Saturday at Shoreline Stadium.
Shorecrest (9-7-4) plays at Mercer Island on Tuesday night to begin the state tournament.
Tyler Hughes scored in the 10th minute for the Storm and Emrys Charrier added the second just before the whistle sounded for the final margin.
“Squalicum played a good game today, and we didn’t play as well as we could have,” Scots coach Drew Thompson said. “We’ve got a relatively young team, and with a state berth clinched, you don’t always play with a lot of urgency. That’s really what happened tonight. We were just too comfortable knowing that we were moving on and Squalicum just wanted it a little more than us.”
