EVERETT — Starting pitcher Alex Shaffer struck out nine batters in eight innings of work as the Everett Merchants defeated the Northwest Honkers 6-3 at Everett Memorial Stadium on Saturday night in the teams’ season and Pacific International League opener.
Relief pitcher Jake Thomas took over for Shaffer, an Everett Community College alum, in the ninth inning and retired the Honkers in order to earn the save.
Merchants first baseman Sam Parris, another EvCC alum. batted 4-for-4 t with three singles, a double and an RBI.
Everett plays a doubleheader today against the Coliquitlam Angels with the first pitch at 1:05 p.m. at Everett Memorial.
