Local softball team competes at nationals

The Lynnwood-based Patriots 96 softball team is competing at the ASA/USA Girls 14-U A Fastpitch National Championships this week in Midland, Texas. The tournament runs through Sunday. The Patriots were scheduled to play their first game Monday afternoon.

The team’s 12-player roster includes 1

0 girls who played high school varsity as freshmen in the spring, seven of them on Western Conference teams.

The Patriots’ roster includes Kathleen Sundet (Monroe High School), Callie Anderson (Shorecrest), Anisa Gomez (Shorecrest), Jessica Gott (Lynnwood), Kalia Chu-Greenough (Sedro-Woolley), Alison Reichert (Bainbridge), Amie Browder (Lake Stevens), Rayne Sylvester (Lake Stevens), Tressa Radach (Moses Lake), Tiffany Dewayne (Meadowdale), Erica Gott (Lynnwood) and Jenna Stupey (Kamiak).

The team is coached by Greg Gott of Lynnwood.

The national tournament includes 103 teams from around the country.

Baseball

Pitcher Owen Jones, a 2007 graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School, earned a spot on the West Coast Collegiate League’s East All-Star team.

Jones pitched one inning, allowed one run and struck out one in the East’s 4-2 victory over the West on July 26 in Corvallis, Ore.

Jones is a member of the Wenatchee Applesox. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-hander leads the WCCL in wins (seven) and strikeouts (70).

He will be a senior next season at the University of Portland.

Roller Skating

Two members of the Lynnwood Expressions artistic roller skating team combined to win five medals — one gold and four silvers — in the youth competition at the 2011 National Figure Championships in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Esha Harwalker, 10, captured a gold medal in the Juvenile B Girls Figures/Circle Loops Combined and a silver in Juvenile B Girls Figures.

Shanel Wofford, 12, collected three silver medals — Elementary B Girls Figures, Elementary B Girls Circle Loops, and Elementary B Girls Figures/Circle Loops Combined.

In the Elite competition, Lynnwood’s Clayton Rhoads placed second in the Jr./JrWC Men’s Free Skating Combined International to earn a spot on the U.S. Junior World Team that is scheduled to compete in the world championships in November in Brazil.

The Senior World Class men’s and ladies competitions began Monday night. The championships run through Aug. 7.

Ice Skating

Seven members of the Everett Figure Skating Club have qualified to compete in the State Games of America, which open their four-day run Thursday in San Diego.

The State Games are billed as “a national multisport event that is held every two years for athletes of all ages and skill levels.” This is the first time the games have been held on the West Coast.

The Everett skaters who have qualified for the games include Kaysa Anderson, 9; Sara Palm, 11; Hanna Clodfelter, 17; Maddie Barczyszyn, 15; Haley Palm, 13; Alexandra Gardner, 10, and Patti Youngbluth, who is competing at the Adult Bronze level.

The skaters qualified for the State Games with their performances at the Pacific Northwest Figure Skating Championships last August.
