Oak Harbor wins 5-4 in extra innings

OAK HARBOR – John Lobbestael has a reputation for coming through when the pressure’s on. And with every clutch hit, his legend swells.

Lobbestael contributed a pair of huge hits on Wednesday, including a two-out RBI single that led to two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, to lead Oak Harbor past Monroe 5-4 in nine innings in a Western Conference North Division baseball game.

Overall, Lobbestael was 3-for-4 to help Oak Harbor improve to 4-11 in league, 6-13 overall. His single down the left-field line in the seventh drove in one run. The score-tying run was scored on the same play on an errant throw to home plate, forcing extra innings.

Oak Harbor head coach Jim Waller said he has come to expect such remarkable performances from Lobbestael.

“He’s our No. 3 hitter and he’s a very good hitter,” Waller said of Lobbestael, who also had a game-winning hit against Monroe last year. “He’s a senior, a three-year letterman. He’s a guy we want up in that situation.”

Other Wildcats also triumphed under pressure. With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Scott Donnell doubled down the left-field line to drive in teammate Matt Badger for the winning run. Lobbestael singled earlier in the inning to propel the rally.

Donnell and teammate Ryan Lange had two doubles apiece. Wildcat starting pitcher Zack Peattie struck out two and allowed one unearned run in five innings.

Pitcher Brian Sims struck out 11 hitters in seven innings and gave up just two earned runs for Monroe (6-7, 8-8). Neil Manthe was 2-for-4 and scored two runs and Andy Ranko was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI for the Bobcats.
