Kamiak wrestling

The 152-pound junior scored 29.5 points to help Kamiak edge Everett 360-356.5 for the championship Saturday at the Western Conference South Division tournament. Seeded third, Cannon earned a pin, a 15-0 technical fall, a 13-3 major decision and a 14-2 major decision to win an individual title.

Cannon’s run included a victory over a wrestler he had lost against earlier this season. He helped Kamiak unseat Everett, which had won the previous three Wesco South tournament championships.

Last year at the tournament, Cannon finished second to Mariner’s Mohammad Mustafa and advanced to the regional tournament. This year Kamiak coach Dan Hanika believes Cannon has a chance to qualify for state.

Strangely enough, an injury earlier this season might have been the key to Cannon’s emergence. Hanika said the injury forced Cannon, who in the past just relied on his sheer muscle power, to practice his technique.

“It slowed him down a little bit,” Hanika said, “and forced him to go in a different direction.”

Cannon is “a leader but he’s a quiet leader,” Hanika said. “He doesn’t jump up and down and pound people on the back but he definitely has a presence. … He’s kind of the catalyst.”

Cannon and the Knights will try to carry their momentum into the Class 4A District 1 tournament this weekend at Everett High.
