GIRLS BASKETBALL

Non-league

Archbishop Murphy 73, Stanwood 67

EVERETT — A battle of Wesco powerhouses saw the Wildcats (11-1) down the Spartans (9-2) in an overtime duel.

Archbishop Murphy junior Brooke Blachly knocked down seven 3s en route to 26 points while senior Ava Marr went nine-for-nine from the charity stripe to score 25. Stanwood junior Ellalee Wortham continued to shine, scoring a game-high 29 points, including four 3s.

The win marked Archbishop Murphy and head coach Ebany Herd’s sixth straight as the Wildcats appear to be hitting their stride.

“We found a way to win. It wasn’t pretty, but we figured it out,” said Herd. “We dug deep when adversity hit and pushed through.”

That adversity found the Wildcats when they trailed by three after three quarters. Herd’s squad needed a strong defensive performance late to claw their way back in, and that’s exactly what they got — the Wildcats Wortham to three points and the Spartans to 13 points in the fourth.

Archbishop Murphy went on to allow just three points in overtime while Marr scored six in the extra period.

“We had moments where defense was our weakness but it was also our greatest strength in the last few moments of the game,” Herd said.

For Stanwood head coach Dustin Swanson, the tough road matchup may have been what his team needed to fine-tune their strong start to the campaign.

“It was just one of those games when the other team made shots. We made them work for it, they just knocked them down,” said Swanson. “With league games coming up, we know they will be close. It’s good to get these games under our belt so we will be more prepared for what’s to come.”

Cascade 49, Marysville Pilchuck 29

EVERETT — The Bruins (2-10) broke a 10-game losing streak in a low-scoring affair against the visiting Tomahawks (0-11). Senior Sally Sylla led the way for Cascade with 14 while juniors Isa Palmer (10) and Kiley Osbjornsen (9) combined for 19. Junior Mone’t Clemens paced Marysville Pilchuck with 10 points.

Junior Davien Parks had a game-high 31 points for Tulalip Heritage while sophomore Jaylan Gray (15 points, 10 assists) and junior Tokala Black Tomahawk (14 points) each had solid outings. Everett 75, Sedro-Woolley 63

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — The Seagulls allowed just 21 second-half points to secure a comfortable comeback win on the road. Everett (5-7), whose 75 points tied for the most they’ve scored this season, had four players score in double digits. Freshman Noah Owens had a team-high 19 points (12 in the third quarter) while seniors Noah Parker (16), Sam Lawless (15) and Alex Tserger (14, four 3s) contributed heavily. Sedro-Woolley (4-3) had one double-digit scorer, as junior Ethan DeJong had a game-high 20 points.
