Prep notebook: Basketball RPI rankings released

Several local hoops teams are highly ranked, and an MP wrestler was honored after beating 2 state champs.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released its Ratings Percentage Index rankings for boys and girls basketball last Wednesday.

As of Monday afternoon, a handful of local teams were ranked in the top 10 of their respective classifications.

The Glacier Peak boys were the top-ranked team in Class 4A and the Mountlake Terrace boys were ranked third in 2A. On the girls side, Lake Stevens was ranked second in 4A, Shorecrest was second in 3A and Arlington was eighth in 3A.

The RPI rankings will be updated continuously throughout the season, up until the conclusion of the district tournaments in February. At that point, the final rankings will be used to seed teams for the state regional round. Teams still must qualify for the state regionals through their respective district tournaments.

This is the fourth season the WIAA has used RPI rankings to seed the state regionals.

The formula to calculate a team’s RPI remains the same as last season’s 40-40-20 ratio. That means winning percentage is factored at 40%, opponents’ winning percentage at 40% and the winning percentage of opponents’ opponents at 20%.

The RPI rankings are available exclusively on the WIAA Live app until Jan. 3, at which point they also will become available on the WIAA’s website.

MP wrestler earns WIAA honors

Marysville Pilchuck girls wrestling phenom Alivia White was named an Athlete of the Week by the WIAA for Dec. 8-14.

White, a freshman, beat two previous state champions en route to claiming the 190-pound title at the Lady Classic on Dec. 14 at Everett High School.

White advanced to the final of her weight class’ 15-wrestler bracket with three straight pins, including a pin of Kent Meridian junior Ofa He Lotu Tuifua, who is the two-time defending 190-pound state champion.

White then beat Lake Stevens senior Kiley Hubby 6-4 in the championship match. Hubby has three top-three state finishes, including a state title at 145 pounds in 2018.

This past summer, White earned All-American honors with a third-place finish at 164 pounds in the Cadet Women’s division of the Junior and Cadet National Championships in North Dakota.

It was a big week in the White family, as Cayden White, Alivia’s older brother, signed with NCAA Division II Minot State (ND) on Dec. 19. White chose Minot State over Lander University (S.C.), Division III Central College (Iowa) and Concordia (Minn.), and NAIA Hastings College (Iowa) and Corban University (Ore.). He plans to study biology.

Cayden White reached the 3A 170-pound final at Mat Classic last February, and placed fifth at the same weight as a sophomore. He is currently the top-ranked 3A wrestler at 182 pounds, according to Washington Wrestling Report.
