Snohomish slips past Vikings

SNOHOMISH – In a game where neither team led by more than five points, Snohomish prevailed 41-38 in a Western Conference North Division girls basketball game.

The victory allows the Panthers to maintain their hold on second place in the division, 1 1/2 games behind Oak Harbor.

After trailing by five points early in the fourth quarter, Lake Stevens rallied for a 38-38 tie.

Snohomish got the winning points when Ann Bailey broke through a Lake Stevens trap to score on a layup with 19 seconds remaining. Bailey was fouled and converted the free throw for a three-point lead.

Lake Stevens’ Maicie Todd had two attempts to tie the game, but her first 3-point shot with six seconds remaining missed and another attempt was short at the buzzer.

“Lake Stevens made it difficult for us by playing a zone,” said Snohomish coach Ken Roberts. “Their zone forced us to take some outside shots. Neither team could make a run to put the game away. Defensively we played great, we just struggled to score points.”

Lake Stevens junior point guard Gina Carbonatto scored eight of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to keep the game close.

Snohomish’s Emmy Cornwell, a senior guard, was 5-for-5 at the free throw line.
