UW’s Perry out nine more weeks

SEATTLE – Washington men’s basketball coach Lorenzo Romar said freshman guard Harvey Perry has a small stress fracture in his lower back and could miss about nine more weeks.

Perry has not played in a game this season and has not practiced for several weeks.

Romar said Perry is required to take four weeks off with no activity, and he is in week three of that period now. After that (likely after Washington plays in the Wooden Classic on Dec. 10), Perry will need “up to eight weeks” of rehab time for his back.

“It could be before then,” Romar said. “We’re just not sure. It could take as long as eight weeks. After that process, we will decide what’s going to happen from there in terms of him playing for us this season.”

The 6-foot-4 Perry played high school ball at Cheyenne High School in Las Vegas, and spent last year at Brewster (N.H.) Academy, where he was the No. 59 ranked player in the nation according to Rivals.com.

Perry played 13 minutes in Washington’s exhibition game against Simon Fraser, scoring two points and grabbing five rebounds. His injury was discovered the day before the season-opening game against Morgan State.

Romar said Perry is optimistic that he would be able to return and play this season, but that decision would not be made until he begins to practice.

“If he gets out after this rest period and he begins to condition and begins to practice and he’s feeling great, he’s got zero pain, then there’s a good chance that eight weeks could be moved up a little bit,” Romar said.

Romar also reported that senior forward Mike Jensen “is doing very well” and his status would be known today. Jensen, a starter on last year’s team, has missed the entire season while recovering from shoulder surgery. Jensen was scheduled to miss 12 weeks, and Romar believed this was week nine of that time frame. Jensen was expected to return either by the Jan. 23 Lehigh game or the Dec. 29 Pacific-10 opener against Arizona State.

Huskies on eBay: The UW is offering a package on eBay for a trip to the Wooden Classic on Dec. 10, when the Huskies will play New Mexico in Anaheim, Calif. Proceeds from the auction will benefit hurricane victims through the All Coaches Care foundation.

The auction closes this afternoon.

The winning bidder receives two roundtrip plane tickets, two nights at the team hotel and two tickets to the Wooden Classic, to be played Dec. 10. Besides Washington-New Mexico, the event also features UCLA against Nevada.

Those interested can search for the University of Washington Basketball Experience on eBay.
