Commitment to the environment during the design and construction of Brightwater’s marine outfall earned King County a Project of the Year Award from the American Public Works Association state chapter.
King County received the award May 19 at the APWA’s National Public Works Week luncheon at the Bellevue Hilton.
The $29 million outfall — a pipeline system sunk 600 feet deep in Puget Sound a mile off Point Wells — will discharge highly treated wastewater when the Brightwater plant begins operating in 2011.
As part of the project, an environmental review studied Puget Sound oceanography and marine biology. Contractors also adhered to environmentally minded regulations, such as limited trench widths to minimize impact on eelgrass; an “orca watch” that halted work if marine mammals approached the construction site; and water quality testing during underwater dredging and concrete installation near shore.
Triton Marine Construction Corp. designed and built the outfall, which was completed in late 2008, a year ahead of schedule.
Other businesses on the project team were Dayton &Knight, manager of outfall design; Anchor Environmental, lead firm on environmental permitting; and American Construction, which managed assembly and towing of the pipes.
South Woods walkway opens
Residents are invited to help the city of Shoreline dedicate a new pedestrian walkway along the length of South Woods Park at 5:30 p.m. June 1.
The ceremony will take place at the park entrance on Northeast 150th Street near 20th Avenue Northeast. Park vehicles at Shorecrest High School, 15343 25th Ave. NE.
Money for the project came from a 2006 voter-approved bond levy.
Registration open for special sports
Registration for the 2009 youth specialty skills baseball season at the Dale Turner Family YMCA is open through May 31. Leagues are open to boys and girls ages 5 to 18 years with physical or mental disabilities. The season runs from June 16 to July 21.
The YMCA specialty skills program is geared toward play development, team building and fun, rather that competition.
“Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment, where each player can participate in the game and feel like a part of the team, regardless of age or ability,” said Kari Schmauch, the YMCA’s youth sports coordinator.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to volunteer as coaches and mentors. Each player is paired with a volunteer who helps coach and support them. If interested in volunteering, contact Schmauch at 206-569-7023 or kschmauch@seattleymca.org.
Financial assistance, to the extent possible, is available to qualifying families. For information, call 206-363-0446 or drop by the Dale Turner Family YMCA at 19290 Aurora Ave. W, Shoreline, WA 98133.
