Fire department to refinance debt

The Shoreline Fire Department, which serves approximately 53,000 residents, announced that the district commissioners recently approved a resolution authorizing approximately $9.4 million of tax-exempt general obligation refunding bonds. It is expected that debt service payments would be reduced by as much as $753,567 over the next 11 years. The department plans to pass the savings on to taxpayers through lower annual tax collections.

The bond market’s current low interest rates provided the department with an opportunity to replace certain outstanding bonds with an average rate of 5.20 percent with new bonds at an average rate of 3.56 percent. The Bonds were sold to Bank of America N.A.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide our community with tax savings from this refinancing” Fire Commissioner Jon Kennison said. “The Department is committed to reducing costs to our taxpayers wherever possible.”
