• Adopted and foster children and their families are offered discounted rates and scholarships at Carter’s Karate and Fitness Academy in Edmonds. As a newly adoptive mother, owner Misha Carter is sensitive to the needs of these children and their families desiring to improve themselves through martial arts.

• Lynnwood’s Accent of Appearances salon collects gently used styling appliances for area women’s shelters. To further these efforts, owner Jody Lende is hosting blow-dry and styling classes. Attendees will have a complimentary shampoo and conditioning plus a scalp treatment, and then will blow dry and style their own hair under the watchful eye of a stylist. • Master Brandon Richards and the students of Mountlake Terrace-based Seattle Tae Kwon Do recently raised funds to benefit the families of fallen police officers. They also purchased T-shirts in which proceeds were earmarked for the officer’s families. These shirts will be donated to the Mountlake Terrace Police Department March 23 along with “thank you” cards hand-written by young students.

Library foundation new officers

Chris Loos, of Edmonds, has been elected president of the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation Board, succeeding Marti Animosa. Loos served as chairperson of the annual fundraising event and was vice president during 2009. She will serve a one-year term as president.

Other new officers serving a one-year term, all of Edmonds, include Rose Olson, vice president; Caryl Thorp, treasurer; and Marisa Clayton, secretary.

Citizen of the Year

Mountlake Terrace Councilman John Zambrano has been elected as chairman of the Emergency Services Coordinating Agency. Zambrano has served as an ESCA board member representing Mountlake Terrace since 2004.

March 10 is the date for the next Coffee with the City in Mountlake Terrace. From 8 to 9 a.m. citizens and business owners can have casual conversation with city officials at the Recreation Pavilion.

Edmonds councilwomen Diane Buckshnis and Adrienne Fraley-Monillas are holding monthly Town Hall meetings to hear citizens’ thoughts and ideas on city matters.
