Charles W. “Chuck” Cain, a founding member of the Edmonds Fire Safety Foundation and longtime owner of Edmonds Lumber and Hardware, died after a relatively brief illness Saturday, April 22, in his Edmonds home. He was 81.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 29, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6215 196th SW in Lynnwood. City officials will be among those paying tribute during the service to Cain.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Edmonds Fire Safety Foundation, P.O. Box 157, Edmonds, WA 98020.

“Chuck was one of the good guys,” a somber Mayor Gary Haakenson told those attending the April 25 meeting of the Edmonds City Council. “He regularly shot his age or less on the golf course,” a feat of which he was proud, continued Haakenson, who said he was a friend and admirer of Cain’s.

“He represented what was the best about his generation,” observed Fire Chief Tom Tomberg. Cain, he explained, not only was a founder of the Fire Safety Foundation, which raises money for and otherwise supports the local fire department, but was a volunteer firefighter here for 32 years.

In addition to working with the Fire Safety Foundation, Cain also was active in Camp Fire and Little League activities, served on the Edmonds Civil Service Commission and was named Edmonds Citizen of the Year in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Joy; and children, Steve (Linda) Cain, Kathy (Terry) Ostlund and Paula Cain.
