Lions head to 1B girls state tourney

Elyse Bunger scored 17 points, pulled down seven rebounds and recorded five steals to help North Sound Christian defeat Tulalip Heritage 39-34 in a loser-out game and take third place in the 1B Bi-district girls basketball playoffs on Feb. 16.

Melissa Castor chipped in a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions. Tulalip Heritage was led by Sheena Robinson, who hit five 3-pointers and scored a team-high 17 points.

North Sound Christian (14-8 overall) defeated Heritage Christian 56-29 in a loser-out game on Feb. 15.

The Lions were scheduled to play Entiat in a first-round state tournament game on Feb. 20 at the Yakima SunDome.

The North Sound Christian boys team fell 77-61 to Lopez in a loser-out contest on Feb. 18. Jordan Smith scored a game-high 37 points to lead Lopez.

Andrew McNabb had 19 points for the Lions, who finished 10-12 overall.

Royals tripped up by Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon dispatched Lynnwood to the 3A District 1 consolation bracket with 54-52 victory on Feb. 19. The Royals play Everett in a loser-out game at 6 p.m., Friday. Feb. 15 at Arlington High School.

Lynnwood’s Aaron Matzen scored a team-high 17 points in the loss. Andrew Beatty and Spencer Hunsinger each had 11 points.

Meadowdale girls secure No. 1 seed

The Meadowdale girls basketball team rolled to another No. 1 seed heading into the 3A District 1 tournament on Feb. 15.

Meadowdale sprinted out to an 11-0 start to defeat Everett 67-39 at Meadowdale High School. Eryn Jones scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Mavericks, who improved to 18-3 overall. Junior Hannah Fjortoft added 12 points.

Meadowdale hosts Wesco No. 5 seed Lynnwood at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, after The Enterprise’s deadlines.

E-W girls ousted by Oak Harbor at 4A tourney

Mietra Smollack scored a game-high 20 points to lead Oak Harbor to a 55-39 victory over Edmonds-Woodway in a 4A District 1 loser-out girls basketball playoff game Feb. 14 at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Edmonds-Woodway was led by Jennifer Singh, who scored 14 points, and Abby Butler, who added 13. The Warriors finished 10-12 overall.

Kamiak eliminates Mountlake Terrace girls

Julia Church scored 12 points and Kelsey Patrick had 11 points and 14 rebounds to lead Kamiak to a 61-49 win over Mountlake Terrace in a loser-out 4A District 1 girls basketball playoff game Feb. 14 at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Mountlake Terrace’s Corrine Pingul scored a game-high 21 points and was the only Hawk in double figures.

Mountlake Terrace finished 4-18 overall.

Wildcat senior signs with St. Martin’s

Archbishop Murphy senior Aleigh Mansfield signed a letter of intent to play for St. Martin’s women’s soccer team in Lacey.

Mansfield is a four-year varsity letterman and a team captain. Mansfield was named all-league, all-area and all-state first team defender for 2007, and helped the Wildcats win the 2A state championship in 2006, a second- place state finish in 2004, and two third-place state finishes in 2005 and 2007.

Ex-Mav scores career-high 29 points in loss

Meadowdale graduate Ashley Fenimore scored a career-high 29 points but it wasn’t enough as the Central Washington women’s basketball team lost 74-68 to Northwest Nazarene Feb. 16 at the Johnson Sports Center in Nampa, Idaho.

Fenimore shattered her previous career-high of 18 points by making 11 of 14 from the field Saturday night against the Crusaders.

She also connected on four of six three-point attempts and accounted for more than 40 percent of the Wildcats’ scoring.
