She played softball as a freshman and sophomore as captain of the team each year. She also has been involved in community activities including Night Waves, Late Night Dances, Lynnwood’s Civic Lights festival and the Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt.

The daughter of Pat and Teresa Shields, she’s won awards for athletics and academics and has a 3.9 grade-point average. She wants to attend the University of Washington and study chemistry with an eye toward medical school or law school.

Help send Scriber Lake to Costa Rica

Twenty four Scriber Lake High School students want to go to Costa Rica this May to help preserve the endangered Leatherback Sea Turtle population.

They are raising money for the trip by selling coffee that comes from small, family owned farms in Costa Rica. The group will receive $4 for every bag sold in its name.

Tortuga Coffee is purchased from cooperatives where farmers get living wages, family medical/dental services, high interest savings and low interest loans and free sustainability support for their farms.

To order, see www.tortugacoffee.com. When checking out after ordering coffee, select “Scriber Lake High School” under “organization selection.”

Participants can also select a specific person to receive credit in the box below, under “SLHS-(individual’s last name).”

Donations also are sought. Checks should be made out to Edmonds School District (Scriber Lake Costa Rica Trip) and can be sent to: Scriber Lake High School, 23200 100th Ave W., Edmonds, WA 98020.

On the trip, students will hike to a school in the mountains to meet indigenous students. They will also learn about rain forests and volcanoes and look for monkeys, sloths and iguanas.

The trip’s focus will be three nights spent scanning Caribbean beaches to rescue eggs laid by endangered Leatherback Sea Turtles. The eggs might otherwise be collected by poachers and sold at local bars with a beer.

The trip is being organized through EcoTeach, an educational and environmental organization. EcoTeach is a 501c3 organization, and contributions are tax-deductible.

Future teacher scholarships

Sno-King School Retirees offers four scholarships to graduating seniors in the Edmonds, Northshore, or Shoreline school districts who are planning a career in education. The deadline is March 21.

The initial amount is $1,200, which can be renewed for three years if the student continues to meet the scholarship’s criteria.

One student will be chosen from each of the three school districts as well as one at-large award. Scholarship applications are available in the high schools.

For information, students can see their school counselor or school scholarship coordinator and can access the application forms at www.sksr.org under “Bulletins.”

Apply for “Car of My Future” scholarships

A new scholarship program sponsored by the Washington State Auto Dealers

Association, or WSADA, asks high school students to design the “car of their dreams.”

The program asks applicants to envision, through a two-dimensional art work and two-page essay, what their personal vehicle of the future might looklike. That includes “the special features they would like it to have, how it would improve their lifestyle and how it would support the environment,” according to a press release.

Scholarships totaling $10,000 will be awarded to five students.

Judges will include WSADA dealer members and staff and representatives from the media, state government and automobile manufacturers.

WSADA serves 352 franchised new-car and truck dealers in 77 cities across the state.

For information, see www.wsada.org/scholarship or http://www.collegeplan.org/cpnow/pnwguide/onlineaps/wsadaonap.htm.
