Open house at Shorecrest set

The Shorecrest faculty invites parents and student to an open house at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 23. Teachers will be in the cafeteria for informal visitation. As time will be limited, the evening is not meant to be used for lengthy conferences, but will provide a good time to arrange a phone conversation or future meeting.

The open house also will provide an opportunity to visit with counselors, career specialists and parent groups. A visit to the library will provide a look at all the resources and technology available to families.

The Career Center also will be open to acquaint visitors with vast resources for “after high school.” Community representatives will be available with resources and information about summer activities. From 6:15-7 p.m., there will be pre-sessions on several classes. Information about honors and advanced placement programs will be in room D-2; Running Start, Room D-1; specific sessions (by invitation) for the English Language Learner (ELL) program, Room E-4; and AVID program in Room F-7.

For more information call 206-361-4286. The school is located at 15343 25th Ave. NE in Shoreline.

Sunset sixth-grader wins patrol honor

Sunset sixth-grader Kelsey McGlynn has been selected as the top safety patroller in the state and will be traveling to Washington D.C. to be recognized along with winners from other states.

McGlynn will be inducted into the 2006 AAA Washington School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame and recognized at this year’s Hall of Fame Award’s Dinner April 7 at Safeco Field.

Following dinner, the inductees and guests will be treated to a Seattle Mariner’s baseball game against the Oakland A’s, where they will be recognized on field with a $50 gift check and a AAA School Hall of Fame award plaque.

Sunset will be given $300, compliments of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, to purchase new patrol equipment.

Each year, AAA selects 10 outstanding School Safety Patrol members from schools throughout Washington and honors them for their hard work, service and dedication to the safety of their fellow students.

Sunset staff said McGlynn exhibited outstanding leadership and spirit as a member of Sunset’s school safety patrol and could always be counted on to treat others with respect and kindness. This is the fifth time in the past nine years that a Sunset patroller has been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Past winners include Hailey Miller, Ryan Robbins, Tara McIntyre and Christy Samuels.

April 24 is now a regular school day

Monday, April 24, will be a regular school day in Shoreline. The potential emergency/snow make-up half day indicated on the school district’s calendar was printed before the state finalized WASL testing dates in April. The April 24 make-up half day was used on Oct. 17, 2005 and therefore, April 24 is now a regular school day.

Shorewood drama spring play ‘Picnic’

Shorewood High School presents its spring play, “Picnic”, by William Inge, at 7:30 p.m. March 17, 18, 22, 23 and 24 at Shorewood Theater, 17300 Fremont Ave. N., Shoreline. Inge’s 1953 Pulitzer Prize-winning romantic drama challenges gender roles, exploring the classic struggle between security and love.

The story begins on a Labor Day weekend as Hal Carter (Cooper Harris-Turner) comes to a small town in Kansas looking for a job from his wealthy college friend, Alan Seymour (A Jon Kerr). He arrives in the backyards of two women: Helen Potts (Kaitlin Carver) and Flo Owens (Gretta Stimson) who lives with her two teenage daughters, Madge (Katelyn Berreth) and Millie (Hollyann Duskin), and a boarder, Rosemary Sidney (Amy Beth Lindvall).

Hal’s unrefined energy disturbs the female atmosphere, causing the women to question what they lack in their lives. Will Millie flourish with the attention of a handsome young man? Will Rosemary ask for more than a casual relationship with her boyfriend Howard (Yasin Warsame)? And will Madge sacrifice her chance for a safe marriage to Alan?

“Picnic” is directed by Seattle University Master’s candidate, Jacob Crouch, and produced by Shorewood drama teacher, Barb Lachman. It also features Stephanie Malinowski, Peter Montzingo and Teela Ryan. Sophia Yackshaw is the stage manager and Molly Gasperini is the assistant stage manager.

Tickets are available at Beach House Greetings by calling 206-542-2773, or can be purchased at 626 NW Richmond Beach Rd., near the Richmond Beach QFC.

“Picnic” is appropriate for mature middle-school-aged students and older. For more information call Shorewood High School at 206-361-4372.
