The Shorelake Soccer Club donated $10,000 to the Coalition for the Preservation of Cedarbrook, coalition president George Piano announced on May 4. The site of the former Cedarbrook Elementary School on Perkins Way in Shoreline is currently owned by the Shoreline School District, and is earmarked as surplus property.

Due to a groundswell of public support, the Shoreline School District granted the Coalition for the Preservation of Cedarbrook 18 months to develop a plan to purchase the property. The Coalition for the Preservation of Cedarbrook is aggressively pursuing grants, public and private donations to ensure the Cedarbrook Elementary property remains a public use area that includes green space, creeks, an active park and sports field.

“Shorelake Soccer Club has been playing soccer on the open playfields of the Cedarbrook Elementary property for over 25 years,” Shorelake Soccer Club president Steve Sharratt said. “These are legacy fields, and 25,000 kids have experienced the joys of soccer and community at Cedarbrook. Preserving them is a top priority for our organization.”

The Coalition will use the funds to launch a formal feasibility study including a full assessment of the recreational uses of the park, according to Piano.

“Preserving the open playfield is a central component of the study,” he said. “We plan on ensuring there is soccer played at Cedarbrook for years to come.”

The Coalition for the Preservation of Cedarbrook will submit their plan to purchase the Cedarbrook Elementary property to the Shoreline School Board in July 2010. Efforts to raise funds for the purchase of the Cedarbrook Elementary property are ongoing. A number of upcoming public events are being planned, which will be announced on the Coalition website, www.savecedarbrook.org. The Coalition for the Preservation of Cedarbrook is a recognized 501c3, and all donations are fully tax-deductible.

“We also want to provide our members with the opportunity to contribute, so Shorelake Soccer families may make an additional donation to the Coalition for the Preservation of Cedarbrook through our online soccer registration for the Fall 2009 season,” Sharratt said.
