After seven weeks it’s all come down to the league finale for Mariner and Edmonds-Woodway.
Tonight’s game between the Warriors and Marauders, who are both tied at 3-1 in the league standings, is for the No. 2 seed in the Wesco 4A South. The No. 2 seed guarantees a spot in the quad-district playoffs, while the loser is relegated to the No. 3 spot, meaning next week’s crossover game is a must-win if it wants to advance to quad-districts.
As for on the field, Mariner and Edmonds-Woodway are both run-oriented offenses. But while the Marauders’ two big backs, Josh Williamson and Kiante Ahmad-Woods, have run for nearly 1,500 yards this season, Edmonds-Woodway’s main running back, Desmond Young, has battled injuries this season.
Young returned two weeks ago after missing more than a month’s worth of action and had a strong second half, rushing for 117 yards in a win over Kamiak. Last week against Lynnwood Young went for 147 yards on just eight carries but he injured his leg on his third touchdown run of the game and didn’t return. Edmonds-Woodway head coach John Gradwohl said that Young suffered a thigh bruise in the win over the Royals and that he’ll be ready to play tonight.
As for stopping Mariner’s rushing attack, Gradwohl said the Warriors will have to be disciplined.
“We have to play assignment football,” Gradwohl said. “We have to take proper angles and rally to the ball. They don’t go down easy so we’re going to need two to three guys on the tackle.”
