Scammers posing as Sheriff’s Office, police say

EVERETT — Police are warning people about a new scam where the fraudsters purport to be from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.

The scammers say they are deputies and that they’re calling to get the victim’s supposed arrest warrant “lifted.”

Victims are told they need to make a payment, authorized over the phone, to avoid being arrested.

That is not how real deputies handle warrant cases, Sheriff Ty Trenary said in a news release Monday.

The scammers are able to manipulate caller ID to make it look like the sheriff’s office is calling.

Victims should call 911. The county website, www.snoco.org, also has warrant lists available for people to check if they are unsure if they are wanted by law enforcement.
